Zap Gun for Hire, PSmith (graphic novels), and an eight issue black and
white miniseries.
Let me say right up front that I am completely irrational
when it comes to this series. I absolutely love it - I have from the moment
I picked up the first graphic novel.
The series follows the adventures of one Buck Godot, Zap Gun for Hire (the
name of the first graphic novel). Buck is a rather large individual with
extremely thick wrists who is, as the name suggests, a hired bodyguard/whatever.
The series follows his various adventures through the galaxy, starting on
the world of New Hong Kong, and wandering around to various places, encountering
various beings.
This comic is pretty much without a doubt my favorite comic of all time.
There are a few I might say are better (not many - Sandman is amongst
the few), but none that I enjoy more than Buck Godot. I am constantly amazed
and saddened by its lack of a following, and I'm convinced that it is primarily
because no one has heard of it.
So please, please, please read it, or Phil may decide to stop writing it,
and I'm not sure I can handle that. Once you've read it, and realize how
cool it is, please pass it along to your friends. I want this thing to take
off, darn it!
Unfortunately I never managed to get my Buck fan
page off the ground due primarily to time constraints, but this remains
one of my very favorite comic series' of all time. In general, I find that
Phil's sense of humor tends to match my own nicely, as do apparently some
of his other sensibilities, since I also find his XXXenophile comics quite
entertaining, deranged and wonderfully twisted as they sometimes are.
Alas, it sounds as if Buck is being shelved for a while at least due to lack of sales. Personally, I blame all of you. So there. Go out and each buy ten copies of each issue, so we can convince Phil to write more of them...
One of the few ever comic adaptations on a par
with the original work (or adaptations of any kind, for that matter...).I
decided to consolidate my review of this to be included in the review of
the series itself. Click here to
go there.
