Don't know much about Sarah Zettel except that she has
written two books of which I have read one. So there.
This book was recommended to me by both my thirteen-year
old sister and my father. I approached it, I am embarrassed to admit, hesitantly,
as it didn't come to me through my normally high-brow in-the-know science
fiction channels. It was a good kick in the rear to remember a) always listen
to your family, and b) don't be such a closed- minded jerk.
I was extremely pleasantly surprised by this book. It is a very interesting
and complex book, with surprises around every corner, and a rich, interesting
universe surrounding it. Few of the characters end the book even remotely
as they started it, and Zettel is unafraid to have some real tragedy befall
her main characters. This book is great for people who like character-driven
fiction, a la Lois McMaster Bujold. This
book reminds me greatly of Bujold's writing as well as (in some ways) the
Gap Series by Donaldson. Trust
me, I consider both of those to be high praise.
This book is fantastic. I am greatly looking forward to any more of Sarah
Zettel's books, and I'm going to have to go out and get her first one to
see if it measures up.
