The outline below refers to books (since that is what we mainly review), but we figure that if you've stuck with us this long, you're fully capable of interpreting how our 10 point scale would apply to other media.

Our Rating System

-- The best science fiction and fantasy written. The kinds of books which people outside our little geek community have actually read and enjoyed.

-- The best in the category. Books we think define a style or genre of sci-fi or fantasy.

-- A superb book. Usually rewarding for any sci-fi or fantasy fan, and will often have fanatical advocates.

-- The typical Hugo or Nebula award winner for best novel.

-- A very good book.

-- This is territory where the reader's personal tastes matter quite alot. If it's your cup of tea you'll probably love it, otherwise it might leave you a bit flat. Usually good books to read in an airport or on a long road trip.

-- You might like this book. You might not. We can't tell.

-- We didn't like this book. ("I don't like you either. You better watch yourself. I've got the death sentence on ten systems." "I'll be careful." "You'll be dead!")

-- What was the publisher thinking?

-- While not much use as reading material, you might be able to use this as kindling, or to build a dike, or maybe as ballast on a hot air balloon.

And, of course, the purple ones are jorn's Ratings and the green ones areven's Ratings. But you knew that...
